Why Stagefright supports Love, Hope, Strength

Love, Hope, Strength is a charity that helps to raise awareness of leukemia and other cancers and of the bone marrow registry.  Stagefright has personally been touched by cancer. Lead vocalist Carolyn Saulson was diagnosed with multiple-myeloma in August of 2009. Since then, she has been in and out of remission three times.  Her battle goes on, but she is a four and a half year cancer survivor.Multiple-Myeloma is a rare plasma cell cancer that affects African Americans at a rate twice as high as the general population. It is in the same family of cancers as leukemia and lymphoma, and bone marrow transplant is one of the possible treatments for this type cancer.

Sumiko and Carolyn Saulson of Stagefright

The song “Stretched on your Grave” was recorded in the studios of 4Flavaz Entertainment, the studio run by Rappin 4Tay, in 2011 when Carolyn, who goes by the performing names Krishna and Killa K, was dealing head on with her cancer diagnosis, fears regarding her own mortality, and physical therapy to recover to guilan-barre syndrome, an auto-immune disorder she developed in January 2010 while her immune system was compromised by the chemotherapy treatments.

The haunting “I Am Stretched on Your Grave” is a translation of an anonymous 17th-century Irish poem titled “Táim sínte ar do thuama”. The Stagefright rendition blends the lead vocals of Carolyn Saulson with backing vocals by her daughter, Sumiko Saulson. The two performed the vocals in musical rounds.  The song tells the story of a brokenhearted griever who refuses to leave the graveside of a lost loved one. It takes on a special poignancy when performed by a cancer survivor and her adult child.
